For over 200 years, the Wajima Kirimoto lacquer works at Wajima in Ishikawa north central Japan has pursued excellence in handicrafts. Last New Year, however, a major earthquake destroyed many homes and dealt a fatal blow to many art and craft traditions in the area, including seventh-generation lacquer master Taiichi Kirimoto’s family business. Fortunately, they were able to construct a temporary workshop (designed by Shigeru Ban) and urge the artisans to return to work quickly.

Nuno has collaborated with Mr Kirimoto many times in the past, and so we designed a print series with motifs based on their artisanal tools, fashioned various items from the fabrics, and donate all proceeds from the sales to the reconstruction Mr Kirimoto’s lacquer works,

As of December 2024, our donations have come to a total of ¥790,545.
