Nuno Fans
In his Glimpses of Unfamiliar Japan (1895), scholar-adventurer Lafcadio Hearn once described everything about Japanese life as dyed in indigo—‘the little houses under their blue roofs, the little shop-fronts hung with blue, and the smiling little people in their blue costumes’. There was a time when indigo was even known as ‘Japan blue.’
The Nuno textiles selected for this exhibition are in all shades of blue and made into ogi folding fans, purportedly a Japanese invention. Back in days of kimono culture, folding fans were not only standard accessories, they served as extensions of the arm, ready at hand to accentuate gestures and lend ceremonial color. Our blue ‘unfolding’ suehiro fans, in particular, are symbolic of spreading good fortune—an auspicious centerpiece for this Compton Verney Japanese Blue Room.
