The Emperor's New Fabrics

SUKÉ SUKÉ
1. revealing, allowing the other side (inside) to show through
2. sheer, gossamer, diaphanous; translucent
3. flimsy; so thin as to present no barrier

Volume 2 gathers together 22 fabrics literally of sukè sukè ("see-through") clarity. Dematerialisations woven down to near-nothingness, that yet appeal to the both most transcendant spiritual aspirations and the most sensual desires. In his sukè sukè essay, leading Japanese architect Toyo Ito examines semiotic allure of three different forms of transparency. Photos and words overlay to form a refractive prism of aesthetic inquiry.
Hardcover; 52 pp, 31 all-colour photos; ¥2,200.
